Songbrids:
Many birds that we know of are songbirds. These birds tend to be small in size. Most of these birds are only about 2-10 inches. You might be able to name a few songbirds: the Chickadee, the Warbler, and others. There are, in fact, many different groups of songbirds, more than we could list here. Many of these birds sing to attract a mate. The Syrinx is what allows the bird to sing. It is found in the bird's throat. All birds have this, but songbirds' Syrinx is more developed than other birds, allowing them to sing. Songbirds first appeared about 50 million years ago in Australia and then spread to the rest of the world. Now you know all about songbirds!

Raptors and Birds of Prey:
Many birds hunt other animals for food instead of gathering nuts, seeds, and fruit. These birds are called Birds of Prey. there are many types of Birds of Prey. The fastest bird is, in fact, a Bird of Prey. the Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird in the world, at 242 MPH! That is faster than most racecars! Their are a few different groups of Birds of Prey. They are:
-Hawks
-Eagles
-Falcons
-Vultures
There also some other brids that are in a group of their own. these birds are the Osprey and the Secretary Bird. The differences between the major groups of Birds of Prey are that Eagles are larger than Hawks, but Falcons are faster than Eagles and Hawks. Vultures are scavengers, meaning they eat dead animals that are left by other animals. Osprey are a bird similar to the Falcon that lives near water and eats fish. The Secretary Bird hunts its prey on foot and chases after its prey without flying. Now you know all about Birds of Prey!

Bird Basics:
For the month of December I am going to be writing articles about birds. Birds are amazing creatures. They are the only animals that can fly other than bats. Many birds have a beak for cracking open seeds, eating insects, and cracking hard nuts and fruit. All birds have wings, allowing most of them to fly. Not all birds can fly, however. Some birds like the Ostrich and the Penguin have wings, but can't fly because they are too heavy. Birds first came into existence 150.8 million years ago. The first bird was a bird called Archaeopteryx (pronounced arc-ee-op-ter-ix). Birds come in all shapes and sizes. Some are tiny, with the Bee Humingbird being the smallest at only 2 inches. Others, however, are large. The largest bird ever is the recently discovered Pelagornis Sandersi (pronounced Pel-a-gor-nis San-der-see) with a wingspan of 17.1 feet. It is extinct, however. Now you know the Bird Basics!
